FOCUS: ALBERTO CONTADOR
Alberto Contador is a professional road bicycle racer of Spanish origin. He last rode with Team Saxo Bank of UCL ProTeam. Conatdor is a climbing specialist and stage racer, in fact one of the best in the world.
After achieving several victories in the time trial category he is considered one of the most accomplished. He is known as an all rounder since he has excelled in all the categories of stage racing and this ability is needed to get a rank in general classification. Winning with almost all the teams he has been associated with, Contador has acquired a place of his own.
Alberto Contador won the 2007 Tour de France when he was with the team of Discovery Channel. The 2008 Gior d’Italia, 2008 Vuelta a Espana and 2009 tour de France was won by him when he was with the team Astana. Though he has a remarkable career it is dotted with allegations mainly related to doping. In 2006 he was first accused in the Operation Puerto doping case and had to withdraw before that year’s Tour de France. He was later acquitted since there was no evidence against him but was again charged the following year after his victory.
After winning the tour de France in 2010 Alberto Contador was accused of doping. He was charged with the use of banned chemical Clenbuterol. He defended by stating that it was due to the consumption of contaminated meat. The Spanish Cycling Federation imposed a one year ban but later withdrew it after hearing his appeal.
The Court of Arbitration for Sports stripped him of his 2010 tour de France title and 2011 Gior d’Italia. A suspension till 5th August 2012 has been given to the fifth racer in history of cycling to have won all the Three Grand Tours.
